hello everyone!
Now in DC with mom and dad. Before leaving seattle, a couple peace corps friends came over to say goodbye and we watched a movie. I really should have picked "the gods must be crazy" (the only light movie we could think of about africa). Instead we tried "knocked up" but the dvd wasn't working, so settled on "Tsotsi", which is about a violent gang member in Johannesburg who had a painful childhood and whose accidental kidnapping of a baby eventually leads him to his own personal redemption. This might sound unrealistic but the acting was incredible, and I highly recommend it. It was really touching. It made me think about how all members of society are interconnected, all part of humanity, and those who are most violent often need the most help. The question is how to help them skillfully. The thought alone, is not enough to overcome prejudice... it must also be felt deeply - the movie helped with that, a little.
I am so grateful for these friends, some who go way back and some who I met in Seattle..
flying to malawi tomorrow, will arrive 35 hours later.

Hope your first days over there have been great! Love to you from all of us!!!!
Just got email that Gail arrived in Mchingi Malawi safely last night. Mchingi is about 20 mi SE of the westernmost tip of Malawi and about 20 mi NW of the point at which Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique borders join. See Google Maps or Google Earth.
We're sending you all our love from the US to Africa.
So glad you arrived safely.
